Steilacoom Town Administrator report to council, May 27

Upcoming Meetings:

  • Council Meeting – June 7, 2016 at 6:30 PM at Town Hall
  • Civil Service – June 9, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Community Center.
  • Planning Commission – June 13, 2016 at 6:30 PM at Town Hall.
  • Preservation and Review Board – June 22, 2016 at 6:30 PM at Town Hall.

Council Future Agenda “Look-Ahead” Issues:

Copies of the Agenda and staff reports are available at all Town facilities once published. The Agenda and Council meeting minutes are posted to the Town’s official website.

Town Offices Closed:

Town offices will be closed Monday, May 30th, in honor of Memorial Day.

Summer Concert Series:

The 2016 Summer Concert series’ schedule has been announced and is posted on the Town’s official website at townofsteilacoom.com.  The concert series starts June 29th and runs through August 31.

Farmers’ Market:

June 1st Opening Day Highlights to kick-off 14 days of shopping local!

The Steilacoom Farmers’ Market will kick-off  the 2016 season with MORE fresh produce, seafood, honey, and fresh-baked breads next Wednesday, June 1st from 3 pm to 7 pm through August 31st.  Yes, we’re starting earlier this year while students are still in school so they can participate in Market activities.   SHMA and the Steilacoom Tribal Museum will open their doors to the public next Wednesday, too.

New this year:  To further showcase seasonal produce and encourage education for eating healthy, we are offering cooking demonstrations by MultiCare Center for Healthy Living, Washivore, and Center for Food Preservation Arts, Hunan Garden Restaurant, and more.

The Steilacoom High School Wind Ensemble (27-piece band) will perform at Pioneer Orchard Park at the close of the Market from  6:30   pm to 7:30  pm.

Harbor WildWatch will be present on June 1st with a hands-on demonstration display.

Public Safety:

Fireworks – Possession and/or Use:

In 2009, the Town Council adopted ordinance 1456 amending the Steilacoom Municipal Code to make the possession and/or use of fireworks illegal within the Town limits subject to fines up to $250 and $500 respectively.  Due to State law, 2011 was the first year this ordinance was in effect and enforced.  Please be aware of the provisions and inform any family members, guests, or others of this regulation.

Crew Emphasis:

The crew concentrated on vactoring catch basins and maintaining/mowing rights-of-ways.

Electrical:

Crew Emphasis:

The crew, assisted by members from other crews, disconnected and reconnected 80+ utility customers for nonpayment, installed temporary power in the 1100 block of 4th Street, assisted the water crew with a service on 5th Street, worked on street light maintenance, and performed other system maintenance.

Water/Sewer:

The crew repaired a service on 5th street, assisted the electric crew with utility disconnections, responded to “dirty-water” calls a result of Lakewood Water’s operations,  and performed other system maintenance.

Parks, Buildings and Grounds:

Crew Emphasis:

Staff continued repairing, charging, and adjusting sprinkler systems and drinking fountains, mowed parks and grounds, and installed the flags in the downtown core.

Steilacoom Summer Day Camp needs you!  Give an hour or even 15 minutes.  Tell the kids about your job, teach a skill or sport, lead a project or an activity.

Junior Explorers with Ms. Melody:

  • Come explore with us!  Class will prepare 3 – 6 year olds for school success. We’ll sing, dance and explore new things while learning letters, numbers and so much more!
  • Class meets at the Steilacoom Community Center, Monday – Thursday from 9:30 am – 1:30 pm. starting in September.  Cost is $250 per month
  • Register at the Steilacoom Community Center.  Cash or check only please.  Questions? Call 253-983-2056
