Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt:
The Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt will be at Cherrydale School on Saturday, March 26th starting promptly at 11 AM. Candy donations for the event will be accepted at the Public Works Building at 1030 Roe Street.
Disabled Parking:
Steilacoom Historical School District and Town staff continue to receive complaints concerning ineligible individuals utilizing spots restricted for disabled parking.
When confronted, individuals will frequently use the excuses that 1) I was only going to be a minute, 2) there isn’t any other available parking close by, 3) no one else was using the spot, 4) I’ve lived in this community for a long time and will use whatever spot I want, 5) I’m involved with the activity that is occurring, or 6) I am eligible but my permit is in my other vehicle.
Illegal and/or improper use of a disabled parking spot or the clear zones between the spots even for “just a minute” (which is never just a minute) potentially denies a qualifying individual access to the facility or activity.
In order to legally use an appropriately marked disabled parking spot, the individual must have been issued and be displaying either the State issued license plate or placard. Failure to have either of these items on or displayed in the vehicle or illegal use of a disabled parking spot could subject you to a $450 fine.
Additionally, no individual, excluding law enforcement based upon a one-time emergent situation, including the abutting homeowner, business owner, etc, may authorize use of the disabled spot by anyone who does not have the appropriate and displayed placard or license plate.
Public Safety:
Safety and Security:
Several arrests were made last week of individuals wandering through neighborhoods looking into houses/cars. Please remember to keep your homes and cars locked at all times and valuables out of plain site. Also, these arrests were assisted by neighbors seeing unusual activity and notifying Public Safety.
This week, we noted a similar vehicle, dark colored Volkswagen or Mazda, white female driver sometimes wearing a hat, with a white male passenger, again casing houses in the Chambers Creek/Madrona Park areas. When approached by a resident, they sped off. If you see a vehicle or individuals matching these descriptions in the residential areas of Town, please notify Public Safety – non-emergency number – 798-4721 as soon as possible. Additionally, if you can obtain a license plate number to provide to Public Safety, it would greatly assist in the investigation.
Training:
PSO Bailey attended BAC recertification this week.
DUI Emphasis:
Two officers will be participating in a DUI emphasis this weekend in Puyallup.
Public Works:
Streets and Storm:

The crew prepared for and cleaned up after the series of storms that blew through Town this week. Additionally, they continued compiling information necessary to complete the annual NPDES report.
Union Avenue WSDOT Audit;
WSDOT officials performed a documentation audit for the Union Avenue project. Some minor follow-up items were noted and were resolved this week. We anticipate a “close-out” letter within the next two weeks.
Electrical:
Crew Emphasis:
The crew conducted a planned power outage on Thursday to replace a transformer in the Steilacoom Woods Apartments that was noted during infrared testing as a likely candidate for failure. Approximately 12 apartments were impacted for approximately 2 hours. Additionally, they continued their infrared testing of the electrical system components throughout Town.
Water/Sewer:
Crew Emphasis:
The crew assisted the mechanic repairing the vactor truck, performed maintenance in the Public Works’ Building lower yard, and performed other system maintenance.
Parks, Buildings and Grounds:

Staff assisted by the Cedar Creek Work Crew concentrated on the Community Center and grounds and building maintenance at Town Hall.
On Thursday, Councilperson Henderson supervised volunteers from the School District potting bare-root plants obtained from the Pierce Conservation District which will be used in plantings this Fall.
